A tooth that is severely decayed, damaged, or has an abscessed can be saved with a root canal (endodontic therapy.)

To save your tooth, the nerves of the tooth and those within the tooth's canals are removed, cleaned, and replaced with a rubber-like material.  The tooth will then have a temporary filling placed that will need to be restored with a crown in the near future.
